Tracing Your Scottish Roots
If you are a Kirkpatrick, and you trace your ancestors back far enough, you will find your family came from Scotland. For some the journey to find your Scottish roots will be easier then most. For others, the journey will be very difficult, if not nearly impossible.
The Kirkpatrick family originated more than eleven hundred years ago. It starts in Albin, now called Scotland, in an estate in Nithsdale, ten miles north of Dumfries. The castle they lived in was named Closeburn where Donald Kirk lived. He was a soldier in the service of King Donald I of Scotland and one day he saved the life of the king, and the king bestowed upon him the estate in Dumfriesshire. Donald Kirk's mother's maiden name is said to have been Patrick, and they combined the two names to form the family name Kirkpatrick - - The History of the Kirkpatrick Family
Kirkpatrick Royalty
Charles Henry Browning's book, Some "Colonial Dames" of Royal Descent" is a great read for anyone attempting to trace royal bloodlines.
Pedigrees showing the Lineal Descent from Kings of Some Members of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and of the Order of the Crown are shown in great detail.
Kirkpatrick Royalty - Pedigree XXVIIL - pages 111-112, begins with Henry I, King of France and continues until we arrive at an unusual variation of the Kirkpatrick name and ends with Lucy Este Crawford:

Issues (Problems): Line of Descendants of Ivone Kirkpatrick: Generations 11, 12, 13, 14.
Kirkpatrick Line of Descendants of Ivone Kirkpatrick problems: Line starting from Generation 11 to Generation 13, has many inconsistencies, or errors that are prevalent throughout all websites on the Internet. Confusion with names George and Alexander Kirkpatrick’s and their dates of birth, death, children, and wives. I will post sites that have information that is in conflict and try to investigate and try and determine which information is correct.
Some women that might be connected to Generations 12, 13 and 14:
1) Isabella Woods – born about 1645; May have married or been involved with, Alexander Kirkpatrick (Generation 13). Slight evidence since Alexander has a daughter named Isabella born 1711 who marries William Douglas.
The fact that she stayed in Scotland with her father would seem to indicate that Alexander died in Scotland.
2) Elizabeth Coursen or Elizabeth Coursen Henderson, born 1702 in Dumfriesshires, Scotland, and date of death of June 3, 1758, Mine brook, Somerset County, NJ,
seems unlikely since that would be the same date as Alexander Kirkpatrick (Generation 14), who might be her husband. They were married in 1721 in Scotland so have to investigate that claim.
3) Elizabeth McCune Kirkpatrick – Various AKA names associated with her – Elizabeth Dumfries, Elizabeth McCune, Elizabeth De Dumfries McCune, and Agnes Elizabeth Philip De Dumfries
with several birth and death dates (1683-1775; 1674-1733). She might have married Alexander Kirkpatrick (Generation 13). She might be the mother of John McCune Kirkpatrick.
Several McCune Family members are Early Settlers of Augusta County
- Biggest problem I have is trying to identify where John McCune Kirkpatrick and Hugh Kirkpatrick fit in and who are their parents: I have found three families that are connected to John McCune (Henry family, Davis family, and Roger E. Kirkpatrick, Owner of Kirkpatrick Funeral Home, Washington Court House, Ohio). I believe that all three of these families are connected to Ivone Kirkpatrick but am having trouble trying to find hard evidence.
- Also having problem trying to connect a different John Kirkpatrick, 1687-1772, who married Hannah Vance. It appears that he settled in the same area in PA as Hugh and John McCune, so he may be related but having trouble finding out who his parents are.
- Story on John McCune is that he was born 1703 in Donegal, Ireland. Parents are unknown but feel confident that Elizabeth McCune is his mother and father is either Alexander Kirkpatrick
(Generation 13) or Major George Kirkpatrick from Generation 12. John leaves Ireland for PA, USA in 1720. He is only 17 at that time so must have had family in Ireland.
He marries twice and dies July 18, 1757, from an Indian attack.
A History of the James McCune Kirkpatrick and Mary Stitt Families
- Hugh Kirkpatrick was born about 1697 in either Scotland or Ireland. (I suspect Hugh was born in Ireland since I believe Major George Kirkpatrick is his father; Isabella Wood (s) might be his mother. Hugh emigrated to PA, possibly in 1720, same time as John, and settled in Chester County, PA. Hugh died about 1768. Will was written in 1766 and proven in 1768.
Possible evidence that Hugh is the brother of John McCune Kirkpatrick:
1) Trying to find record that shows John leaving Ireland in 1720 and that also on that trip is Hugh.
2) Hugh lands in Chester County, PA; John lands in Cumberland County, PA. These two counties are separate by about 94 miles.
3) John marries a Jane McFarland (1703-1772) whose parents are Robert McFarland & Jennet Buchanan Genet. One of Jane’s siblings, with same parents, is Rachael McFarland (1713-1794) who marries John Wilkins.
One of their daughters marries John Kirkpatrick (1741-1812) who is the son of Hugh Kirkpatrick. One site has daughter Jean Wilkins marrying Hugh’s son John but believe that is wrong daughter and should be Margaret Wilkins.
Will of Hugh Kirkpatrick and have his wife as Margaret Gregg:
Hugh Kirkpatrick Research by Tom Caulley
The Very Close Connection of Kirkpatrick and Gaston Families:
- Hugh Gaston, 1687-1772), marries Jennette Kirkpatrick, 1698-1777. Both were born in Ireland. I'm having a hard time finding out who Jennette's parents are. Since Alexander Kirkpatrick (Generation 14),
has a daughter Jennette, born 1725 in Ireland, maybe their is a connection.
- Hugh Gaston Jr,1733-1808, son of Hugh Gaston Sr. His 3rd marriage is to Mary Kirkpatrick, daughter of David Kirkpatrick, 1724-1814, son of Alexander Kirkpatrick (Generation 14) and Mary McEowen
- Andrew Kirkpatrick, 1720-1777, son of Alexander Kirkpatrick (Generation 14), marries Margaret Gaston, born 1728. Margaret's parents are Joseph Gaston, brother of Hugh Gaston Sr, and Margaret Linn
- Andrew Kirkpatrick, born about 1690, son of Alexander Kirkpatrick (Generation 13), comes over from Ireland to USA on boat with his wife Mary and daughter Martha, born 1728 Ireland.
Martha later marries Joseph Linn in 1747.
- Hugh Gaston Sr and his brothers arrive in USA around 1720 so suspect there may be some relaionship wuth John McCune Kirkpatrick & Hugh Kirkpatrick, but still looking for some proof.
Marries: Elizabeth? They have five children:
1) Andrew – 1720-1790 (17777); he marries Margaret Gaston
2) David -1724-Mar 19, 1814; he marries Mary McEowen, sister of Duncan
3) Alexander – 1725-1811; he marries Margaret Anderson
4) Jennet Kirkpatrick McEowen – 1725; she marries Duncan McEowen. They settled later in Maryland
5) Mary Clement Kirkpatrick Bigger – 1728; she marries John Bigger. They also settled later in Maryland.
Research notes for Generation 14:
Generation 14 comes the closest to being correct. A few issues need to be resolved:
a) What is Elizabeth’s maiden name
b) Alexander’s birthdate is in question, with probably 1685 being correct birthdate.
c) While death date and location of death are correct, many other websites are in conflict with various Alexander’s with same death date, but different birthdate, parents, and children.
1) The children’s list, date of death, and wife’s first name of Elizabeth are all correct that is supported by
Alexander’s will:
- Wife – Elizabeth
- Children:
- i) Andrew – 1720-1790 (17777); he marries Margaret Gaston
- ii) David -1724-Mar 19, 1814; he marries Mary McEowen, sister of Duncan
- iii) Alexander – 1725-1811; he marries Margaret Anderson
- iv) Jennet Kirkpatrick McEowen – 1725; she marries Duncan McEowen. They settled later in Maryland
- v) Mary Clement Kirkpatrick Bigger – 1728; she marries John Bigger. They also settled later in Maryland.
2)Andrew and David were born in Scotland; The family fled Scotland about 1725 for Ireland, so that would support that Alexander, Jennet and Mary were all born in Ireland. They then left for the USA via boat in 1736.
3)The Jacobite Rebellion (1689-1690, 1708, 1715, 1719, and 1745) – Had a deep impact on Ivone Kirkpatrick’s descents (No 12-No 14)
That may explain why Alexander fled Scotland in 1725 for Ireland and then left for the USA in 1736.
4) Various stories have been written that Alexander left by boat with his family and several others, to include his four brothers.
One site claim that as many as 65 were on that boat
Trying to find list of those that came over. This would be helpful to trace back to Generation 13 and gives some evidence that his likely father is Alexander and sons must include Alexander, probably the first born, and
Andrew and at least three other sons
5) Will of Captain John, son of Andrew
6) Claim that Andrew came over with Alexander to USA with his wife and child Martha, born 1728 in Belfast, Ireland.
Issues with Generation 13:Alexander Kirkpatrick (born about 1650-1670), death: unknown
Marries: Elizabeth (unknown). They have six children:
- 1) Alexander – born about 1685 - Alexander’s will:
- 2) Andrew – born about 1690 and dies around 1754. Marries a Mary? - Looking for his will from 1754 in NJ
- 3) James – born about 1710. He marries Mary Newton - James’s will:
- 4) Isabella – born 1711. She marries William Douglas and remains in Scotland with her father. Slight evidence that mother might be Isabella Woods (Wood), born abt 1645).
- 5) John – born about 1701-1713; death: about 1765, Rockbridge County, Virginia - Early Settlers in Augusta County, VA
Wife: unknown
- 6) Thomas – born about 1700 - 1710; death: May 9, 1786, Rockbridge, Virginia; wife unknown - Early Settlers in Augusta County, VA
(Thomas is one of five brothers who came over from Ireland to USA around 1736). Their sister Isabella stayed home in Scotland with their father Alexander Kirkpatrick (Generation 13)
Research notes for Generation 13:
1) Father of Alexander born in 1650, seems reasonable. There is no date of death or wives list, possible problem with child list since there are three other possible children. Need some research to determine if information is correct and add missing information.
2)* Quite certain this John Kirkpatrick, 1687-1772, who married Hannah Vance, is not one of the five brothers who came to USA around 1736 since he emmigrated to USA in 1711 *
Marries: Chloe Coward. They have seven children:
- 1) Major George Kirkpatrick of Knock – (1671-1738)
Wife not known. His seven children: - a) Alexander of Drumcondra, (Aug 1, 1714 – Aug 17, 1791). He marries Elizabeth Ester Henderson (1721-1750) on April 26, 1740, St. Audeon, Dublin, Ireland.
- b) Robert Kirkpatrick – (1702-1746)
- c) George of Knock – (1710 – 1798)
- d) Anne Kirkpatrick Jordan – born 1710
- e) Joanne Kirkpatrick Holland – born 1710
- f) William – (1712 – May 8, 1787). Marries his cousin, Henriette Kirkpatrick (1732-1785); daughter of Robert Kirkpatrick of Glenkiln & Henrietta Gillespie
- g) Grizzel Kirkpatrick Kehoe
- 2) Alexander Kirkpatrick (Generation 13)
- 3) Robert of Glenkiln (born 1648; beheaded 1747 for part in Jacobite the 45). Married Henrietta Gillespie. One of his grandsons, William of Malaga, went to Spain.
His granddaughter Eugene would later marry Napoleon III and become Empress of France
- 4) James of Knock – born about 1686
- 5) Winifred – (1652-1680)
- 6) Thomas – (about 1685) – Became the 1st Barone of Closeburn – Title created on March 26, 1685
- 7)Anne - born about 1672
Research notes for Generation 12:
- 1) Not certain of birth for George or his wife Chloe. Kirkpatrick Children’s list showing Alexander Kirkpatrick, born 1650, would suggest that George was born around 1630,
maybe earlier. Research needed to verify children’s list.
- 2) Possible brothers of Major George Kirkpatrick: John and Hugh. The John might be John McCune Kirkpatrick who fled Ireland with Hugh to USA in 1720. Need to investigate.
- 3) Major George was an officer in the Army of William of Oranges Army during the failed Jacobite rebellion of 1689. He is forced to flee to Antrim, Ireland in 1690.
It is possible that he is father of John McCune Kirkpatrick who was born in Donegal, Ireland in 1703.
- 4) Need to verify that Alexander is George’s middle name. Also, date of death.
- 5) Slight evidence that Isabella’s mother might be Isabella Woods (Wood), born abt 1645.
Marries: Margaret Cairnes Lady Orchardtoun – she married three times; William was 1st marriage
They have five children:
- 1) Sir Alexander Kirkpatrick, 3rd Lord of Kirkmichael – son John Kirkpatrick, born 1687 – Marries Hannah Vance
Two Vance Brothers are Early Settlers of Augusta County
- 2) George Alexander Kirkpatrick – (generation 12)
- 3) Kathryne Kirkpatrick McIntyre – marries William McIntyre II
- 4) Michael Kirkpatrick
- 5) William Kirkpatrick
Research notes for Generation 11:
1) No date of birth or death is given for William or his wife. Believe William died in 1689.
2) Children’s list needed to be investigated
Here are five examples of five seperate families that I heard from:
I able to connect line 4, Asami Isomichi, as being descendends of Ivone Kirkpatrick in Scotland, via Generation 15. Lines 1-3 are connected via John McCune to each other, but having trouble connecting John McCune Kirkpatrick to Ivone Kirkpatrick descendents since father and mother are unknown:
1) Alana Davis Family - Michigan - She has traced her line as being descended from John McCune Kirkpatrick, born 1703 in Donegal, Ireland.
Here is her line that connects to John McCune Kirkpatrick:
- John McCune Kirkpatrick, born 1703, Donegal, Ireland
- Joseph Kirkpatrick, (1740-1819), son of John McCune. Marries Eleanor Friend
- Susanna H. Kirkpatrick Morrison, (1785-1868), daughter of Joseph Kirkpatrick. She marries William Morrison
- William Kirkpatrick Morrison, (1816-1894), son of William Morrison & Susanna H. Kirkpatrick Morrison. He marries Matilda Friend
- Sarah Morrison, slave of William Morrison. They have son Samuel Thurman Morrison (1865- 1910-1915). He marries Mary Middleton
- Daughter Marie Morrison (1919-2000), marries Nelson Davis (1917-1996)
- Son Clarence Albert Davis, born 1943 and still living
- His daughter is Alana Davis
2) Henry Line - Maryville, NY - Henry Family Tree
Looking at Michelle's family tree, you will see that she also is a descended of John McCune Kirkpatrick. Looking more into that line, find that Benjamin Kirkpatrick, son of John McCune, has a relative, Samuel Kirkpatrick, that had written a book called "The Samuel Kirkpatrick family 1779-1938 that traces their line as they leave PA to settle in Collinsville, Ohio and would indicate a close connection to the Davis and Roger Kirkpatrick families, and his line in Ohio. And from John McCune's grandson, James Kirkpatrick, find a strong relationship with the Gaston family that probably connects the lines to family number four.
3) Roger E Kirkpatrick - Owner of Kirkpatrick Funeral Home, Washington Court House, Ohio
Here is his line that connects to John McCune Kirkpatrick:
- John McCune Kirkpatrick, born 1703, Donegal, Ireland
- James Kirkpatrick, born about 1728, son of John McCune
- Samuel Kirkpatrick, born Jan 8, 1767, son of James Kirkpatrick
- One descendant took a Y DNA test
*** Strongly suggests this line is linked to SW Scotland as early as the 12th century *** - Abraham Kirkpatrick, born May 27, 1793, son of Samuel Kirkpatrick
- Joseph Warren Kirkpatrick, Born Sept 3, 1836, son of Abraham Kirkpatrick
- Cassius Kirkpatrick,Born July 19, 1861, son of Joseph Warren Kirkpatrick
- Ansel William Kirkpatrick, born Apr 13, 1891. Started Kirkpatrick Funeral Home. Son of Cassius Kirkpatrick
- Richard William Kirkpatrick, born Jan 1, 1921, son of Ansel William Kirkpatrick
- Roger E Kirkpatrick, born Dec 1948, son of Richard William Kirkpatrick
4) Asami Isomichi - Asami Family Tree
Here we find that Asami's line goes back to Andrew Kirkpatrick who married a Maragaret Gaston. His line is connected to Ivone Kirkpatrick via Generation No 15. Also see a strong connection via the Gaston family to Asami's line and Henry line.
And a connection to family 5) Of Eric Shanower & David Maxine Families:
They both have a connection to John Kirkpatrick (1770-1808) in the following ways:
a) John Kirkpatrick is Eric & David's great, great, great, great grandfather
b) John Kirkpatrick is the third child of nine, that Alexander B. Kirkpatrick (1741-1825) & Jane had
The Asami Family fills in two pieces of generations for Eric & David:
1) Connection to Alexander B. Kirkpatrick & Jane Stewart, the parents of John Kirkpatrick
2) Connection to Generation 15 since Alexander B. Kirkpatrick is one of five children of Andrew Kirkpatrick (1720-1771-1790) & Margaret Gaston
And that connects to Alexander Kirkpatrick (1685-1758), the father of Andrew Kirkpatrick - See Alexander’s will:
5) The Families of Eric Shanower & David Maxine
Here is their line that connects to Alexander Kirkpatrick, born 1650, Dumfriesshire, Scotland:
- Alexander Kirkpatrick, 1685-1758, Scotland to Ireland to Mine Brook, NJ
- John Kirkpatrick, (1770-1808)
- Anderson Kirkpatrick,(1805-1887) - Married Emmaliza Moss (1812-1874). They have their family bible
- William Henry Kirkpatrick - father of Louis Dilliard Kirkpatrick
- Louis Dilliard Kirkpatrick, (1873-1951)
- Edna Claire Kirkpatrick Mott, (1897-1973). The only child of Louis Dilliard Kirkpatrick
- Mary Lee Mott Maxine, (1897-2004) - The mother of David Maxine
