The name Kirkpatrick is Scottish, common in Dumfriesshire, where it derives from a chapel dedicated to St. Patrick in the parish of Closeburn in that shire.
The first on record was the twelfth century Roger de Kirkpatrick who had a charter from Robert the bruce for lands in Dumfrisshire near the River esk. There was a Kirkpatrick sept of Clan Gregory and there may have been one of Clan Colquhoun.

In Ireland, the name Kirkpatrick is found almost exclusively in Ulster, where over two-thirds are in Co. Antrim. A survey of 1857 found kirkpatricks common in thirteen out of fourteen baronies of that county.

Alexander Kirkpatrick marries Susanne Nimmo

My great, great-grandfather, Alexander Kirkpatrick, was born around 1800 in Cork, Ireland. Alexander Kirkpatrick married Susanne Nimmo about 1830. They have three children:

• James Henry born August 12, 1830 in Northern, Ireland
  
• Mary born August 4, 1831 in Northern, Ireland
  
• Thomas born February 18, 1835 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland.
  

My Guess is that Thomas, Mary, and James Henry came over to Canada sometime around 1853-1863. This is based on:

• Thomas (the youngest born in 1835) in order to travel overseas had to be at least 18 yrs. old (1835+18 = 1853)
  
• James Henry's first born, Jane "Jennie", was born Jan 4, 1864 in Canada.

Guess that Thomas, Mary, and James Henry left Canada sometime before 1864 based on:

• Thomas's first born, John Walter (my grandfather), was born Jan 26, 1864 in Cleveland
  
• James Henry's 2nd born, William J., was born May 24, 1865 in Cleveland, Ohio

In those days babies died early so birth certificates were not issues at birth but later on as evident by the death of several unnamed Kirkpatricks (baby Kirkpatrick).
The Thomas Kirkpatrick Clan buried those that didn't live long at Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. And the vast majority of the other Thomas Clan was buried at Highland Park Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.
The James Henry Clan used the same cemetery for newborns that didn't live long (Woodland Cemetery), but the vast majority were not buried at Woodlawn, but at Riverside or Lakewood Park Cemeteries.
